Matai Pukhiri is a natural lake located on top of the hill as blessed by God in Nunchhari of Mahalachari Upazila, 20 km south of Khagrachari in the hilly district . Matai means god and Pukhiri means pond. And so this lake of natural beauty is well-known to tourists as God's Pond. The lake is believed to have formed from the eruption of a dead volcano. Spread over an area of 5 and a half acres at a height of about 1000 feet above the sea level, Devta Pond is 1500 feet long and 600 feet wide. The pond is surrounded by dense green forests and well-ordered mountain ranges. The water in the Devta Pukur lake never dries up completely and during the monsoons it is filled to the brim.
There are several folklores as to the reason for the creation of the god's pond or lake. A local jum farmer continues to grow jum in a dream, defying the ban of the deity. Within a few days, after an earthquake, the locals found that a reservoir had formed in the area of Jhum Hill. It is also believed that the water god himself dug this pond to meet the water needs of the local residents. According to the popular legend about the depth of this water body, a Hindu man named Revati Ranjan came back alive from the face of death when he tried to measure the depth of the lake on a bamboo raft.
And the traditional religious, nature-worshiping Tripura community of the region believes that the treasure is hidden at the bottom of the deity pond, which is guarded by the deities themselves and can be found by asking the deities on the banks of the lake. Every year on Chaitra Sankranti, Tirtha Mela and Maha Yajna of Prakriti Pujari Tripuras are organized here. In the hope of gaining merit, many people from far and wide come to the god's pond known as the pilgrimage site of Tripura.
