Introduction to Bhatpara Neelkuthi Meherpur

Bhatpara Neelkuthi (Bhatpara Neelkuthi) stands as a witness of brutal torture by the British on the banks of Kajala river in Gangni upazila, 14 km away from Meherpur district town. In 1859, this Nilakuti, 80 feet long and 70 feet wide, was built on an area of 27 acres.
The roof of the Nilkuthi, built with brick lime suraki, is made of iron beams and brick tiles. Today, apart from the main building, Saheb's pleasure house, bedroom, kachari house, jail, death well and horse house survive. In front of the building there is a mango garden and on the south side the fragment of the church built for the prayers of the Nil Kuthi officials. According to folk tradition, still late at night, the sound of dancers' taps and farmers' cries can be heard from Nilkuthi.
Kajala River flows by the side of Nilkuthi. In 2016, a government initiative to develop Bhatpara Nilkuthi as a tourist center created artificial lakes, fountains, beautiful statues of various animals and birds, kids zone and attractive flower gardens. Every day visitors come to see the ruins of this Bhatpara Neelkuthi standing as a witness of time and to wander around in the pleasant surroundings. Currently, this Nilkuthi is under the supervision of the Revenue Department of the Government of Bangladesh.
