Introduction to Sheikh Mahmud Shah Mosque Kishoreganj

An ancient Sheikh Mahmud Shah Mosque with a dome is located 10 km away from Pakundia Upazila of Kishoreganj district. During the reign of Subedar Shaista Khan in 1664 AD, Shah Mahmud, a famous businessman of Egarsindhur, built this mosque. Although the original name of the mosque is Shah Mahmud Mosque, UNESCO has registered it as Shah Mohammad Mosque as a monument of Muslim architecture.
Built in the Mughal architectural style, this square mosque stands on a raised platform surrounded by two and a half feet walls. The length of each arm of the mosque is 32 feet. The interior and exterior of the mosque are decorated with paintings from the Sultanate period. Shah Mahmud Mosque has four octagonal turrets in the four corners, 3 doors on the eastern wall, three mehrabs with terracotta paintings on the western wall. At the entrance to the mosque is an attractive two-story cottage-style house, known as the “Balakhana”.
In the past there were four precious stone plaques at the four corners of the mosque which were stolen by miscreants. Besides, Sheikh Sadi Jame Mosque is located 1 km away from this mosque. It is said that Shah Mahmud and Sheikh Sadi were two business brothers. Sheikh Saadi Mosque was built 20 years before the construction of Shah Mahmud Mosque.
