Introduction to Mathiner Kup Coxs Bazar

Mathin's well is located in Teknaf police station near Naf river in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar. In the late eighteenth century Teknaf had only one fresh water well to meet water shortages. Rakhine girls used to come every day to draw water from a well in the police station premises. Police officer Dhiraj Bhattacharya was transferred to this police station from Kolkata. Along with everyone, Mathin, the daughter of the Rakhine zamindar, used to come to fetch water from here. Mathin eventually falls in love with Dhiraj and the two decide to get married. But suddenly the news of Dhiraj's father's illness came. So Dhiraj wants to go back to Calcutta but Mathin stops him. Mathin was afraid that Dhiraj might not come back from Calcutta. But Dhiraj left Kolkata without informing Mathin. Mathin, the daughter of a Rakhine landlord, fell into the arms of death, giving up her beautiful life forever due to insomnia and hunger after the beloved man left.
The love symbol of Dhiraj and Mathin was preserved by the local police administration and named Mathiner Kup . Almost 80 years after this incident, in 2006, Teknaf police station officer Khaled Hossain and journalist Abdul Quddus Rana renovated Mathin's well. Gradually Mathin's well became known everywhere as a symbol of immortal love.
