Introduction to Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara

Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara is located on a hill in Pahartali Mahamuni village of Raujan Upazila of Chittagong district. It is believed that in 1813, a Buddhist priest named Chainga Thakur established this Buddhist monastery by installing the statue of the great man Gautama Buddha. For this reason Mahamuni Temple is named after Gautama Buddha. Dr. again. Ramachandra Barua in his 'History of Chittagong Mugs Pragukta' mentions that the temple and idols of Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara were built in 1805. Although the establishment date of Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara cannot be confirmed, there is no doubt that this structure is a historical monument of about 200 years old.
In 1843 AD, Mong Circle Raja Mahamuni introduced a fair from the last day of the month of Chaitra in the Buddhist Vihar square. Which became known as Mahamuni Mela across the country. At that time, many visitors from different parts of undivided Bengal used to come to the fair. Today the village has become a sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists for the historic Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara.
