Hazrat Shahjalal Mazar

360 Sylhet city of Aulia is known as 'Poonyabhumi'. Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) is one of the pirs and dervishes who are buried in the soil of Sylhet. And that is why he is called Olikul Shiromani. Hazrat Shah Jalal (RA) was respected by people of all religions. Every year, a large number of people irrespective of caste and religion can be seen visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA).

There is a pond to the north of Hazrat Shahjalal's shrine. This pond is adorned with numerous giant fish. It is said that Hazrat Shahjalal (R.A.) came with 360 awliyas to Sylhet and brought Ghajar fish. The visitors enjoy seeing these fishes floating in the pond and feed the fishes. There is a well beside the shrine of Shahjalal (RA). Golden and silver colored fish are seen in this well.

Legend has it that after hearing about Hazrat Shahjalal's (RA) spiritual powers, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) welcomed him and gifted him a pair of swarthy colored pigeons as a sign. That pigeon is now widely known as Jalali pigeon. Pigeons flocking to the shrine entertain visitors.

To the south of the shrine is a room just two feet wide studded with grillahera stars. It was used by Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) as a shrine. People say that Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) spent about 23 years worshiping here.

Through the Dargah Madrasa building, on the left side, Mufti Nazimuddin Ahmad's house has facilities for visitors to see swords, khams, plates, bowls etc. used by Hazrat Shahjalal (RA).

The main Dargah Sharif of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) is a sacred place, keep in mind the sanctity of the Dargah while exploring around.

AC/Non-AC buses of Green Line, Saudia, S Alam, Shyamli and Ena Paribahan operate on Dhaka-Sylhet route from Fakirapool, Syedabad and Mohakhali bus stands in Dhaka. Ac bus fare to Sylhet is 1400 to 1500 taka and non-ac bus fare is 680 to 700 taka.

From Dhaka to Sylhet by train you can choose Upaban, Jayantika, Parabat or Kalni Express trains from Kamalapur or Biman Bandar railway station as your travel companion. To go by train, the fare will be 375 to 1288 taka per seat.

You can choose the air route to go from Dhaka in the fastest time and comfortably. From Shahjalal International Airport, Biman Bangladesh, NovoAir and Biman US fly to Sylhet.

From Chittagong you can go to Sylhet by bus, train and air. From Chittagong to Sylhet by train, two trains namely Paharika and Udayan Express ply 6 days a week. To go by train, the fare will be 450 to 1541 taka per seat.

The shrine can easily be reached by CNG, rickshaw or auto rickshaw from Sylhet railway station or Kadmatoli bus stand. If you go by rickshaw, the fare is usually 20-25 taka and if you go by CNG, the fare will be 80-100 taka. And you will get an auto rickshaw from any part of the city to the shrine.

There are many quality rest houses in Lala Bazar area and Darga Road with low rent Where you will get different types of rooms for 500 to 1000 taka. You can also stay in hotels like Hill Town, Gulshan, Darga Gate, Surma, Kaikobad etc. according to your needs and capacity.

You can eat a variety of local food at affordable prices at Pansi, Panch Bhai or Palki restaurants in Zindabazar area. The spicy food of these restaurants is one of the attractions of the tourists. Besides, there are various quality restaurants in Sylhet city, you can eat anywhere you like.

Apart from Hazrat Shahjalal's Dargah, the notable tourist places in Sylhet city and surrounding areas are Hazrat Shahparan Shrine, Malnichhara Tea Garden, Jaflong , Bichnakandi , Ratargul , Lovachhra , Lalakhal, Panthumai Jharna, Sangrampunji Jharna , Keen Bridge, Ali Amzader. Ghari, Hakaluki Haor, Bholaganj , Dreamland Park etc.
