Bibicini Shahi Mosque

Bibicini Shahi Mosque, one of the examples of Mughal architecture in Bangladesh, is built on a small hill in Bibicini Union of Betagi Upazila of Barguna District. A domed mosque surrounded by various types of trees is located 10 km from Betagi Upazila Sadar.

It is known that in 1659 AD, Hazrat Shah Niamat Ullah (RA) arrived in this region from Persia for the purpose of spreading Islam. And this Shahi Mosque was built through him. Bibichini village and the mosque were named after Chinibibi and Isabibi, daughters of Hazrat Shah Niamat Ullah. The square-shaped Bibichini Shahi Mosque is 33 feet in length and breadth, and the walls are 6 feet wide. The height of the mosque built in Mughal style is about 25 feet. Hazrat Shah Niamat Ullah (RA) passed away in 1700 AD during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb. There are 3 graves about 15 cubits long beside the Bibichini Shahi Mosque. According to local people, this grave belongs to the founder of three mosques, Hazrat Shah Niamat Ullah (RA) and his two daughters. Presently the Bibichini Shahi Masjid is listed by the Department of Antiquities and the mosque has been renovated in several phases.

If you want to visit Bibichini Shahi Mosque from Dhaka, you have to come to Barguna city first. Abdullah Paribahan, Hurti Paribahan and Shakura Paribahan AC/Non-AC bus fares range from Tk 600 to Tk 1400 among buses going to Barguna from Syedabad and Gabtali in Dhaka. Or you can go directly to Betagi by Bargunar launch. M from Sadarghat launch terminal in Dhaka. V Yuvraj-2, MV Nusrat-2 and several other direct and local launches leave for Barguna between 5 pm and 6 pm. The deck fare of these launches is 250 to 350 and the single cabin fare is 800 to 1000 taka.

You can get a bus from Barguna town to Betagi. Motorcycles/Rickshaws are available for hire from Betagi to Bibichini Shahi Masjid. Or you can come to Barisal by bus and go to Bibichini Shahi Masjid.

Return to Barguna Sadar from Betagi for overnight stay. There are several residential hotels and rest houses to stay in Barguna town. Among them Zilla Parishad Rest House, LGED Rest House, Water Development Board Rest House, Khamarbari Rest House, Public Works Department, CRP Rest House, Barguna Rest House, Hotel Tajbin, Hotel Alam are notable.
