Polo Bawa Utshob Habiganj

Dalbendhe river fishing village is an ancient tradition of Bengal. Polo Bawa Utshob (Polo Bawa Utshob) is organized in Baniachong of Habiganj district and Deokals, Dasghar, Daulatpur, Madai etc. in Bill and Howre in the dry season i.e. from Ashwin month to Agrahayan month every year. A special kind of trap or fishing trap made of bamboo is called “Polo”. The people of the village use polo for various daily activities apart from fishing. Avid hunters look forward to the Polo Baich festival throughout the year.

When the Haor water begins to decrease in the winter season, the day of the Polo Baich festival is fixed by the murabbis of all the surrounding villages. On the appointed day, about a few thousand people come to Baran Bill in groups with various native fishing equipments including poles, nets, ropes. And after fishing, moving forward to the beat of the rhythm is another joy of the villagers. At that time there was a festive atmosphere in the villages.

From Dhaka to Sylhet you can go to Habiganj by Hanif, Green Line, Ena, Agradoot Paribahan or Digant Express bus. And Habiganj can be reached by Paharika, Upban, Jayantika, Parabat P Kalni Express train from Dhaka's Kamalapur railway station. From Habiganj, local bus, CNG and auto rickshaw can go to Baniachong or Biswanath upazila.
