Introduction to Mai Saheba Jame Masjid Sherpur

After entering Sherpur district town, the first traditional Mai Saheba Jame Masjid is noticed. Built approximately 250 years ago, this mosque has been renovated several times, but the imprint of tradition can be clearly seen in it. The two towering minarets of the Maisaheb Masjid located on the southern side of Sherpur Government College, the heart of Sherpur city, are visible from different parts of the city.
There is a story about the naming of Maisaheb Jame Masjid. At that time Tinani zamindar of Sherpur invited the zamindar of Muktagacha. The zamindar of Muktagacha wants some land in Sherpur for his fortune. The zamindar of Sherpur decided to give the site of the mosque to the zamindar of Muktagacha and ordered the demolition of the existing rent-collecting house with elephants. But as soon as he went near the house with the elephant, the elephant sat down with salutation. Hearing this, Tinani zamindar himself came and found a woman inside this room engaged in worship. The landlord realizes his mistake and goes back apologizing. That woman's name was Mai Saheba. After Mai Saheba's death, the zamindar built a mosque here and named it Mai Saheba Jame Masjid.
The 3-storey Maisaheb Jame Masjid is fully air-conditioned. Around 9000 worshipers can pray together in the mosque. Every Friday, besides Sherpur city, thousands of Muslims from surrounding areas come to pray in this mosque. Maisaheb Jame Masjid is also well known as the highest donation receiving mosque in Mymensingh Division. Non-Muslims also regularly donate here.
