Introduction to Lal Dighi Chittagong

Lal Dighi is one of the traditional places of Chittagong city. Located at the end of Jail Road under Ward No. 32 of Chittagong City Corporation, Andarkilla, Zila Parishad Bhavan and some local bank branches are located around Laldighi. After the administration of Chittagong was handed over to the East India Company in 1761, the land tehsil office (now the Metropolitan Police Office) was painted red. At that time it came to be known as Lalkuthi. Later, the Jail Khana situated on the eastern side of Lalkuthi was also painted red and came to be known as “Lalghar”. Due to the same incident, the lake next to Lalghar and Lalkuthi came to be known as Laldighi.
The entire empty space at the foot of the hill of the Metropolitan Police headquarters was once known as the Municipal Maidan. Due to road construction in the late 19th century, the Municipal Maidan was divided into two parts, one side containing the public playground and the other side the Muslim High School playground. This field is now known as historical Laldighir field. Rai Bahadur Rajkamal Ghosh, the zamindar of Chikdair village of Raujan upazila, was Laldighi's guardian. He gave ownership of Laldighi to Chittagong City Corporation.
Abdul Jabbar first organized Balikhela at Laldighi on 12th of Baisakh in 1910. Since then every year on 12th day of Baisakh month, Jabbar Ballikhela is being held at the same place. At present there is a mosque and a park on the west bank of Laldighi.
