Introduction to Kalurghat Bridge Chittagong

Kalurghat Bridge (Kalurghat Bridge) is a traditional place located about 7 kilometers away from Bahaddarhat on the south side of Chittagong city. During the First World War (in 1914) the need for a bridge across the Karnaphuli River arose for the movement of troops. As part of the construction of the bridge, in 1930 Brunick & Company Bridge Builders Howrah, a company started the construction of the bridge. The 700-yard-long Kalurghat Bridge was inaugurated in 1930 for train traffic only, but during World War II, the bridge was decked to facilitate vehicular traffic. After the partition of the country in 1958, the bridge was given its present shape to make it suitable for all kinds of vehicles. Kalurghat Bridge has two abutments, six brick pillars, twelve steel pillars and nineteen spans.
During the Liberation War in 1971, the wireless station established near Bahaddarhat became widely known because of the historic Kalurghat Bridge and the wireless station was named Kalurghat Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. On March 26, 1971, Major Ziaur Rahman on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced the independence of Bangladesh from this Kalurghat Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. Currently Kalurghat Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra is being used as a broadcasting center of Bangladesh Betar.
