Varendra Research Museum

Varendra Research Museum located in the heart of Rajshahi city is the first museum of Bangladesh. And in the list of archeological collections, Barendra Museum is one of South Asia.

In 1910 Sarat Kumar Roy, zamindar of Dighapatia, Natore, Akshay Kumar Maitra, a lawyer and Ram Prasad Chandra, a teacher of Rajshahi Collegiate School, formed the Barendra Search Society for the collection and preservation of traditional artifacts of Bengal and collected 32 rare artifacts. Later in 1913 Varendra Research Museum started its journey in its own building.

The existence of Barendra Research Museum has faced various crises at various times. From 1949 to 1961, half of Varendra Museum was used as a medical school. In 1964, when the museum was about to close again, Rajshahi University took over the Varendra Research Museum. Apart from Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, various famous personalities have visited Barendra Research Museum.

Varendra Museum has more than 9000 artefacts. The collection of the museum includes artifacts of Indus civilization, artifacts of Mohenjodaro civilization, stone statues, 11th century Buddha statue, Bhairava head, Ganga statue, Mughal period silver coins, round gold coins of Gupta Emperor Chandragupta, round silver coins of Emperor Shahjahan etc.

Barendra Research Museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Saturday to Wednesday. Varendra Museum is closed on Thursdays, Fridays and University declared holidays.

Varendra Research Museum is located in Rajshahi city. After coming to Rajshahi you can visit this museum by your convenient vehicle. It is located next to Rajshahi College, the main center of the city.
