Sagardighi Tangail

Historical Sagardighi is located 30 km east of Ghatail upazila headquarters of Tangail district. Covering an area of ​​about 13 acres, this famous lake was excavated under the leadership of Sagar Raja of the Pala period. The earlier name of the area developed around Sagardighi was Lohini but now it has come to be known as Sagardighi.

Folklore has it that Sagar King dug this reservoir to relieve the water woes of his subjects. After digging, no water came up in the reservoir, the king was instructed in a dream to lower the queen into the lake. Later, after the queen was lowered into the lake, the lake filled up and her life was in danger. According to many, water rose in this lake through the self-sacrifice of a pious potter named Sagar, as a result of which the lake was named Sagar Kumor's Dighi or Sagardighi.

On the western bank of Sagar Dighi are the ruins of the Shaan Bandano Ghat, which is believed to have been the royal residence. On the north and south sides are Sagar Dighi High School and Sagar Dighi Dakhil Madrasa. Also on the southern side of the Dighi, Sagar Raja's son Banaraj Pal dug another Dighi on an area of ​​about 25 acres, known as “Bainya Dighi”.

In case of going to Sagardighi from Dhaka , first you have to come to Ghatail upazila of Tangail. It takes about 150 hours to go from Ghatail to Sagardighi. You can go to Ghatail in Tangail by bus or own transport from Dhaka. From Dhaka's Mahakhali or Kalyanpur, take an AC/Non-AC bus like Nirala, Baram, Jhtika, Sakal Sandhya, Sonia, Dartgami and Dhaleswari or a Dhanbari-bound bus and get down at Ghatail Cantonment. You can easily go to Sagardighi by auto or CNG from Cantonment. Bus fare will be 160 to 200 taka.

You can visit Ghatail lake from Dhaka and return to Dhaka in one day. If you want to stay overnight, you can stay in some mid-range residential hotels in Ghatail town like Shapla Residential Hotel, Bonsai Residential and Mithali Guest House. Besides, there are various quality residential hotels, rest houses and resorts in Tangail city.

Among the hotels and restaurants located in Ghatail, Tangail, Dhansindi Hotel, Hotel 5 Star, Atiba Restaurant, Shantar Hotel and Robir Hotel etc. are notable. Besides, don't forget to eat the famous Chamcham of Porabari, just 22 km from Ghatail town.
