Introduction to Hajiganj Fort Narayanganj

Hajiganj Fort is a historic water defense system built during the Mughal period, located on the banks of Shitalakshya river in Hajiganj of Narayanganj district. At that time, Hajiganj was known as Khizirpur, so many called it as Khizirpur Fort. Hajiganj is one of the three water forts or triangle of water forts built in the 17th century by the Mughal Subadar Islam Khan after establishing the Mughal capital at Dhaka to repel the attacks of Mughal and Portuguese pirates. And the other two forts are Sonakanda Fort and Idrakpur Fort. The distance of Hajiganj Fort by road from Dhaka is about 15 km.
There is disagreement about the construction date of Hajiganj fort. According to some, the fort was built in 1610 AD. Others believe that it was built between 1650 and 1660. The quadrangular Hajiganj fort is 250 meters long and 200 meters wide. The pentagonal boundary wall has holes for firing guns. There are 4 bastions in the four corners of the fort. There are also stairs to the top of the ramparts and an observation tower in one corner where cannons are placed. In 1950, this Hajiganj fort was listed by the Directorate of Archeology of Bangladesh and renovated in various stages to give it its present form.
