Dhakeshwari Temple ( Dhakeshwari Temple ) is a historical shrine and national temple of Hindus located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The word Dhakeshwari literally means 'Ishwari of Dhaka'. Many people think that Dhaka was named after the Dhakeshwari temple.
This temple was built in the 12th century by King Ballal Sen of the Sen dynasty. However, the architecture of Dhakeswari temple does not match the construction style of that period. So according to historians, the temple's original design has undergone such a change as a result of successive renovations. During the liberation war of 1971, the Dhakeshwari temple was badly damaged by the Pakistani forces. After the independence of Bangladesh, the temple was rebuilt according to the original design.
Dhakeshwari Mandir is located on Dhakeshwari Road on the south-west side of Sir Salimullah Hall of Dhaka University. The mandapam of the temple has a standing altar of a metal-made idol of Goddess Durga. And every year Durga Puja is organized in Mahanagar Puja Mandap outside the main temple premises. Dhakeswari temple has 4 Shiva shrines, Santhoshi Mata shrine, pleasure place, kitchen, fruit cutting room, shoe storage area in north-west corner of Dhakeswari temple. The Dhakeswari temple also has administrative buildings, quarters, guest rooms, meeting rooms, libraries, flower gardens and embankment ponds.
