Cherrapunjee is located in the Indian state of Meghalaya. Located at an altitude of about 4,267 feet above sea level, Cherrapunji receives the highest rainfall in the world. Sohra is the local name of Cherrapunji, the seat of Khasi literature and culture, built around Cherabazar. Cherrapunji is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Some narrow mountain roads and some deep gorges, playing hide and seek with the clouds on the mountains, one will get lost in this state of extraordinary beauty. It takes only 2 hours to reach Cherrapunji from Sylhet's Tamabil border point. Enjoying Asadha or Shravan rain here is a dream for any travel lover.

Cherrapunji in Meghalaya , India has several places to visit. On the way to every place, you will see many charming fountains and there are mountain slopes.

Apart from this there are some other places of interest like Rainbow Falls, Seven Sisters Jharna, Eco Park, Arwa Cave, Kharma Stone.

The real beauty of Cherrapunji is beautifully captured in the rainy day. Because at this time all springs are full of water. And so monsoon season is the best time to visit Cherrapunji in Meghalaya. June-August is the best time to visit Cherrapunji. Apart from this, you can go anytime from May to October. During winters (November to February) Cherrapunji gets very cold and hence it is an off season for tourists, the temperature is only 5-15 degrees. Even though the springs are dry, Cherrapunji has a different beauty in winter. So you can go to Cherrapunji by choosing the right time.

Shyamli bus will take you to Shillong if you want to go to Cherrapunji by Shyamli transport . And you can easily go to Cherabazar by taking a shared car or taxi from Shillong.

Or you can come to Sylhet by bus or train from Dhaka. Take bus or CNG from Sylhet to Tamabil. After completing the immigration, you can take a taxi from Dawki directly to Cherabazar or Shillong and stay for one day and then go to Cherabazar. You won't know when you will reach your destination to see the beautiful scenery on the winding mountain road.

If you want to travel in less cost, take train from Dhaka to Sylhet and from there take bus or CNG to Tamabil. From there, after completing passport checking at Bangladesh Immigration, cross the border and go to India Customs Office. After completing immigration from India Customs office, from there first go to Dauki Bazar and then Shillong by taxi or mini bus. Then you can go to Cherrapunji after a short walk across Shillong's Wardslake gate.

Apart from this, you can go by bus from Dhaka to Sylhet. In that case first you have to go to Sylhet from Dhaka by AC or non AC bus. Buses usually leave between 10-12 pm and reach Sylhet at 5-6 am. Non AC bus fare is Tk 470. Bus service of Enna, Shyamoli, Hanif is good. Then local bus to Jaflong is available next to Sylhet counter. The fare is 65 rupees per person. It will take 1.5-2 hours to reach Jaflong. Then from there you have to go to Tamabil Bangladesh Immigration.

Border Crossing – Immigration starts at 9am at the Immigration Office. A short form has to be filled in at the passport office and submitted along with the travel tax slip. Then passport checking is done once at Tamabil Passport Office. Then passport checking is done again at Tamabil Tax Office. The information of all electronic items should be entered and signed here.

It's best to go in a group to visit Cherrapunji or Shillong to save on expenses. Apart from this, Shyamoli Paribahan has a 3-day Shillong-Cherrapunji package for Tk 5100. There are several resorts to stay in Cherrapunji. The rent is more or less depending on the season.

Cherrapunji Holiday Resort : Cherrapunji Holiday Resort is 14 km away from Cherrapunji. The room rates here start from Rs 3,200 to Rs 3,850. One advantage is that the cost includes breakfast. But if you rent a room for four people, you can get less, the room rent for four people is Rs. 2000.

Pala Resort : Rooms here start from Rs 3,850 to Rs 4,950.

Cafe Cherrapunji : There are two types of accommodation here in tents and cottages. Tent rent is Rs 1000-2842 and cottage rent is Rs 3,500-4,500.

Apart from this there are some good accommodation options like Kutumadan Resort, Polo Orchid Resort, Green Valley Restaurant and Accommodation, Halali Restaurant cum Lodge, D-Cloud Guest House, La Cooper Inn.

But if you want to stay in low cost, Sohra Plaza Resorts in Sohra Market are also good to stay. Apart from this you can also stay in Naingriyat village, home stay is available here, room rent for four people is between 1000-1500 rupees. Ramakrishna also has guest houses and American missions to stay. You can stay in a double room between 800 and 4,000 rupees in Policebazar, Shillong. Don't forget to try the local delicacies Jado Stem Chicken and Chicken Neyong at the holiday resort. Apart from this, chicken mom, egg roll, vegetable noodles are likeable among street food. Police market is good for shopping. You can buy clothes, shoes, bamboo products and chocolates from here. Apart from this, oranges, honey and cinnamon can be found in Sohra Bazar. You can buy pure honey and various kinds of spices near Nukaikali Falls. But Cherrapunji is better to buy food items and any hobby or home decoration showpiece.

You can travel from Dhaka via Shillong to Cherrapunji and come back to Dhaka for a total of 8000-9000 taka. To visit Shillong, Cherrapunji, Mawsinram, Nartiang and Maolinong easily and at low cost, you can join the tours organized by Meghalaya Tourism Department. The tour starts from the Tourist Information Center on Jail Road, Police Bazar. But if you have 8 to 10 people in your group, you can visit the tourist places by renting a Tatasumo. There is no need to get confused about the taxi fare as the police will know the fare amount by looking at the list at the taxi stand in the market.
