There are hardly any people who have not heard about the famous Porabari Chomchom of Tangail . Porabari, made by maintaining the ancient tradition of almost two hundred years, has a world-class reputation. Known as the king of delicious and tempting sweets, people flock to Tangail to taste this chamcham made by Chana. And because of this charm, Tangail district has a unique name all over the world.
This dessert is made in a small village on the banks of river Dhaleswari in Porabari, Tangail. It is believed that the natural environment of Dhaleswari river has a special influence in making Chamcham. And for this reason, the artisans believe that it is not possible to make this sweet outside of Tangail city. In ancient times sweet makers were called Halai. Porabari Chamcham is made with channa made from desi cow's milk and sugar is used. Although there is no definite information about the master craftsman of delicious Porabari Chamcham, a craftsman named Jashorath is believed to be the master of this sweet. Later, the Ghosh and Pal clans of Porabari village were involved in making Chamcham through generations.
At present there are 13 sweet making factories in Porabari Bazar, Charabari Bazar, Santosh. Apart from this, there are around 50 sweet shops in Tangail's Mishti Patti area and all over the city. Apart from Porabari chamcham, these shops also offer various sweets such as rasgolla, pantoa, amitti, rajbhog, mohan bhog, jilapi and curd. The traditional Porabari Chamcham occupies a special place in various festivals nowadays.
