Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan ( National Parliament House ) located in Sher Bangla Nagar of the capital Dhaka is a unique representation of the architecture of Bangladesh. The construction work of Sangsad Bhavan started in 1961 but it was completed in 1982. The main hall is located in the center of the National Parliament building designed by architect Louis I Kahn. Members of parliament do the work of parliament in the main hall. Other parts of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan are built around the main hall room. Although the Sangsad Bhavan has nine floors, only three floors have horizontal connections and the height of the structure above ground is 49.68 meters.
The main complex of Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan is divided into 9 parts. The central octagonal section is 47.24 meters in height and the remaining eight sections are 33.53 meters high. The total area of buildings in the Sangsad Bhawan complex is Main Building 74,459.20 square meters, South Plaza 20,717.38 square meters and North Plaza 6,038.70 square meters. The basement of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan houses car parking, offices of supervisory agencies and various facilities associated with the main building. Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban surrounded by an artificial lake looks like a building floating on water.
On the north side of the Parliament Building is the Presidential Square adorned with green grass gardens and eucalyptus trees. There are no columns anywhere in the Parliament building, as if the massive concrete has been carved into an exquisitely crafted sculpture. Which has given special uniqueness to Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban from other modern buildings of Bangladesh.
