Birsrestha Munshi Abdur Rauf Monument, one of the brave sons of Bengali, is lying in eternal sleep on a small island of Kaptai Lake at Burighat of Naniarchar in Rangamati district. The words “Tumi Durjay, fearless deathless soul” written on the grave site surrounded by deep blue water are a unique expression of his glorious heroism. Every year on Independence and Victory Day, many visitors from far and wide come to pay their respects to this great hero of the Liberation War. Apart from this, the pineapple plantation of Naniarchar on the way to the burial ground, the engine-driven boats plying in Kaptai lake and the beautiful scenery around also fascinates everyone.
On April 20, 1971, a section of the 8th East Bengal Regiment was fighting against the Pakistani invaders in Burighat Chingri Khal area of Mahalachari police station in Rangamati, Chittagong Hill Tracts. That day, three launches loaded with heavy weapons and two speed boats surrounded the freedom fighters. In a sudden attack by the invading forces, Munshi Abdur Rauf fought the enemy alone with a machine gun and helped his comrades to escape to safety. In the battle, two launches and a speed boat of the invading force sank in the water, two platoon soldiers were killed. Munsi Abdur Rauf was martyred by a mortar fired by the surprise attack force. Later, Dayal Chakma, a native of Burighat Bhangamura area, recovered his body and buried it on a small island in Kaptai Lake. On April 25, 1996, the grave site of Munshi Abdur Rauf was identified with the help of his comrades and local residents. On March 25, 2006, a memorial with a sculpture of the rifle was erected.
