Jahangirnagar University (Jahangirnagar University) was established in 1970 in a charming natural environment in Savar Upazila under Dhaka District. The area of the entire university area is about 697.56 acres. It is well known as the only full-fledged residential university in Bangladesh. Jahangirnagar University has a butterfly garden covering an area of about 300 acres. There is an opportunity to learn about the beauty of about 110 species of butterflies while visiting the garden of different varieties of flowers. In this garden, through natural and artificial reproduction, more new butterflies are produced and released in the garden.
During the winter, a guest bird fair is held at the lake of Jahangirnagar University campus surrounded by greenery. Among the guest birds are Khanjana, Sarali, Patitara, Patarihans, Gayar, Nonajotsa, Lalmuri, Dhupani, Indus Eagle, Bamunia Duck, Hood Hood, Barighora etc. The chirping of guest birds, the beauty of Jalkeli and the red bells splashing in the water of the lake spread the fragrance of a unique natural beauty throughout the campus. As a result, this university becomes a meeting place for bird lovers when winter comes.
Jahangirnagar University has about 17 lakes, big and small. However, the lake adjacent to Jahanara Imam and Pritilata Hall, Administrative Building and Mir Musharraf Hussain Hall is the most popular guest bird sighting. Hence the university administration has already declared the lakes as sanctuaries for visiting birds.
These guest birds mainly come to Bangladesh from India, Nepal, Mongolia, Siberia and Xinjiang. They stayed at Jahangirnagar University from the end of October to March.
