Birshrest Noor Mohammad Sheikh was born on February 26, 1936 in Mahishkhola village (now Noor Mohammad village) of Narail district. In 1971, he joined sector 8 of Jessore region to participate in the war of independence. Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Sheikh Complex has been built at Noor Mohammadnagar in Chandibarpur Union of Narail to inspire the next generation in the patriotism and valor of this great hero.
On September 5, 1971, a five-man standing patrolling team led by Noor Mohammad was sent to Gowalhati village in Sutipur. At around 9:30 am, the Pakistani army surrounded the patrol and started shelling heavily. The freedom fighters kept trying to rescue the petrol. Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad continued to face the enemy with the wounded Sepoy Nannu Mia on his shoulder. Once he was seriously injured by an enemy mortar. Wounded, Noor Mohammad continued to rifle alone until his comrades were able to get to safety. The injured Noor Mohammad was caught by the invading forces and brutally killed.
Later, his fellow soldiers recovered his body from a bush near the battlefield and buried him in Kashipur, Jessore, on the Bangladesh-India border. After the independence of Bangladesh, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the state title of Virshrestha in recognition of Noor Mohammad's immense bravery, bravery and love for the country in the war of independence. To preserve his memory, the Government of Bangladesh has established a trust and Birshreshtha Shaheed Noor Mohammad Sheikh Library & Memorial Museum at his birthplace.
